Ukiah Pony League All-Stars edge Lake County 7 4 in opener

Ukiah and Lake County opened the Pony League tournament at Anton Stadium with Ukiah winning 7 to 4. Bechtel homered for Ukiah, Trebotich slugged a lead-off shot in the seventh, and Treppa, Weatherford, Snay, and Williams contributed key hits as Ukiah built a late cushion. Anderson of Shasta County later faced Sebastopol in a pivotal game as Sebastopol’s bid for an undefeated run was halted by a late rally and defensive miscues.

Redwood Empire Singles Classic Ends on Sunday

Ukiah area and Mendocino County bowlers race to qualify for cash prizes in the Redwood Empire Singles Classic at Yokayo Bowl. Leaders include Terry Michaud San Mateo with 125 and Lee Barlow 1344, Gary Ramsey 1339, Pete Mastenbroek 1324, and Vinnie Turner top woman bowler. Frank Wilson Healdsburg leads men with 2590 in 12 game handicap.

Feerick Named Coach of Warriors Quintet

SAN FRANCISCO UPI Bob Feerick is named coach of the San Francisco Warriors in the National Basketball Association. Feerick, once Santa Clara coach and athletic director, said he accepted after earlier turning down an offer and will also serve as business manager when his three year contract ends.

Competition Tough In Babe Ruth Playoffs

In San Fernando California Arizona beat Nevada 8 runs in the eighth to win 3 3 and knock Nevada out. Northern California won 2 3 in extra innings over Utah to eliminate Utah from the playoffs.

Santa Cruz San Jose Vie in Colt League Regional

In San Jose the Santa Cruz team meets San Jose in the second round of a Colt League Regional. Santa Cruz defeated Springville-Spanish Fork Utah 51 in seven innings with a combined relief effort by pitchers Johnny Pierce and David Netto. The loser faces Springville-Spanish Fork in a consolation game.

Ukiah Dolphins to Host Mountain View Swim Team

Some 79 youngsters aged 8 to 16 from Mountain View arrive in Ukiah for a morning meet at the Ukiah Municipal pool. Ed Adams, recreation director at Mountain View, brings the Skimmers to test the Dolphins in a friendly interclub test, with trophies and awards to be presented by the Ukiah Optimist Club and Ukiah Police Association.

Top Local Bowlers Vie For Trip

Twelve top bowlers were narrowed to three to meet next week for a deciding match to join a later finals series. Bud Hess and Curley Ownes of Ukiah face off at 10 30 pm Labor Day in Sacramento at the State Fair Invitational Mas ters' tournament. Frassinello earned a finals berth after edging John Finnegam in a tiebreaker. Other Masters starters included Rantes Canelini Bon nifield Smith Greatt Turner Gowan Kasano. Bert Friend did not bowl. Ed Scott becomes first full time Negro scout for the Boston Red Sox.
