Mendocino County artists are invited to enter the annual Christmas seal design contest. A $300 local prize will be awarded to the best entry by Bay Area experts, with a $1,000 national prize for the 1970 Christmas Seal design. Deadline is Sept 13. Entries will be displayed locally in September before shipment to New York City for national judging. Playground Awards Scheduled Friday at Ukiah Park
The Ukiah Recreation Department will honor top performers on Friday in a Trophy Day at Ukiah Municipal Park. About 110 youths competed across events including Jump and Reach, standing broad jump, 50-yard dash, tetherball toss, ping-pong, and other activities in the summer playground program.

Miners Found Dead At Kentucky Coal Mine Blast
Nine miners trapped by an explosion at the River Queen mine near Greenville Kentucky were found dead by rescue workers after hours of effort in extreme heat. Eight bodies were recovered near the shaft interior and a ninth closer to the mine mouth. Names include Will Rice Robert Fridinger Bobbie English Ernest Miller James Harris Frankie Epley Paul Creekmore Denny Saling and James Bryant.
