Giants Sweep Mets In Split Doubleheader At Home

San Francisco beat New York 9-7 in 20 innings and 4-1 as Willie McCovey and Jay Alou led with multi hit games. Alou raised average above .300 as Gaylord Perry prepared to face the Phillies while the Giants stretch on pace in the NL standings.

White Chance Brilliance Lifts Phillies In Six-Game Streak

Chance White, once thought finished after injuries, stars for Philadelphia. He homered and drove in runs as the Phillies beat Houston to extend their winning streak to six, with manager Gene Mauch lauding White’s comeback and health as he powers toward a pennant push. Chicago, St. Louis, and New York also win in a busy MLB day.

Ukiah Lakeport Auto Racing Weekend Report

Spectator excitement ran high at NCAA weekend races with multiple heat winners across divisions. John Silva, Bill Lasseter, and Steve Castelli won opening heats. Castelli claimed the main in Ukiah with Max Simmons second. Castelli also dominated the Powder-Puff with Linda Castelli winning. Deschamps secured trophy cash in Super-modified and main events. Peggy Caslake won the Powder-Puff in Lakeport. Keith Caslake has yet to win a trophy.

Raiders Top Chargers In Raider Exhibition Debut At Oakland

Oakland Raiders defeated the San Diego Chargers 24 to 23 in the opening exhibition at the new Oakland Coliseum as Daryle Lamonica impressed with a late 80-yard drive ending in a TD to Hagberg after a key two yard run and a 19-yard pass to Billy Cannon. Coach John Rauch lauded Lamonica’s poise amid the win and noted remaining work for the team.

Land Park Punches Ticket to Utah Pony Playoffs

Carmichael defeated Ukiah in an earlier elimination and then nearly forced two games to topple Land Park of Sacramento. In the first game Ken Walker outpitched Steve Furtado, though a seventh inning homer by Dennis Bertacchi gave Land Park a 2-1 win. In the second game Carmichael out hit Land Park but lost 3-1 as Ken Warren beat Pat Koch, sealing Land Park’s sectional title and a regional trip to Springville Utah.

Davis Honored as Outstanding Graduate in Brooklyn Playground

Tommy Davis of the New York Mets will be honored tonight by the Department of Parks as the outstanding graduate of his public school playground area in Brooklyn. Davis won two National League batting titles with the Los Angeles Dodgers before joining New York.

Ellis and Spencer Impress in Astrodome Boxing Debut

In Houston, Jimmy Ellis and Thad Spencer won their first round bouts in the elimination tournament to crown a new heavyweight champion. Spencer defeated Ernie Terrell by a unanimous 12 round decision amid boos for Terrell’s fouling, while Ellis stopped George Martin after a ninth round technical knockout. Cassius Clay, defrocked over draft resistance, did not appear in person.

Ukiah Lions announce signups for Pop Warner tackle football for boys aged 9 to 13 who will not be 14 by December 1. Signups Saturday at 9 a.m. at Anton Stadium, with physicals at 10 a.m. Coaches Moe Ivey and Robert Rinehart seek participants, noting league weight limits of 120 pounds for the first three games and 123 pounds thereafter.

UCLA Coach John Wooden Hospitalized With Exhaustion

UCLA coach John Wooden, 56, is resting at St. John’s Hospital with exhaustion and flu symptoms. He was hospitalized Saturday and ordered to take two to three weeks of rest. Known as the Wizard of Westwood, Wooden led UCLA to three NCAA titles and 19 straight winning seasons.
