Bartlett pears harvest to peak in Mendocino County
Harvest of Mendocino County Bartlett pears is set to peak by week’s end with an expected crop of about 40,000 tons, down from a 51,000 ton 1973 record. Ukiah Valley and Hopland sheds ramp up labor to 160 and 200 workers respectively as packing firms anticipate a strong fresh fruit market despite offers from the California Canning Pear Association. The harvest should finish by August end, with higher elevations maturing later.
