General Business Services appoints Horton to Ukiah office

LaMont Horton is named associate director at the Ukiah office of General Business Services in Washington D.C. He trained at GBS’s institute in D.C. and has managed Beacon Drive-In since 1953 while living in Ukiah since 1949. The Ukiah office serves northern California with 63 GBS areas north of Los Angeles. Mary Bombard retires after 32 years at Marianna Shop, planning travel with husband and 19 year old Pomeranian Ginger. A new grand opening is planned as well.

Tourists Count At Lake County Center As Season Peaks

The Lake County Chamber of Commerce information office in Middletown served 1,101 tourists in July. Total travelers since opening May 1 reached 2,809, with July 4 alone recording 129 visitors. Most visitors were from California though many came from other states and abroad. The Guenoc Grange staff, led by Lorene Payne, will keep the office open daily through Labor Day.

All-Star Little League telecast on Channel 13

Channel 13 teletapes the sectional Little League All-Star game between South Ukiah and Airport All-Stars of Sacramento in Vacaville tonight. If Ukiah wins, the sectional final will be taped and telecast Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Channel 13. Ukiah FM station KLIL will tape tonight’s game and air a 10 05 a.m. Saturday broadcast and rebroadcast Saturday if needed. Radio KUKI provides progress reports and will interrupt Giants games tonight and Saturday if Ukiah wins.

Suit seeks 50000 in general damages for Ukiah crash

A civil suit filed alleges that on October 22, 1970, on Norton Street near N State Street in Ukiah, Harold L. Norman negligently drove a 1965 sedan, colliding with Bill N. Jackson. Jackson suffers head and body injuries with mental and physical pain, seeking 50000 in general damages plus medical costs, loss of earnings, and suit costs.

Fort Bragg officer sues city over overtime pay

James Soudan, a former Fort Bragg police officer who resigned June 30 1970, sues the City of Fort Bragg in Mendocino County Superior Court for 6830.10 in back overtime pay claimed for work not compensated. He says overtime was to be paid as compensatory time and notes two other officers receive overtime pay. The suit seeks payment and costs.

Edmond Johns dies at 66 in Minnesota

Lawrence Johns of Ukiah returned from Little Fork Minnesota to attend the funeral of his father Edmond Johns 66 longtime Ukiah area resident and Boonville mill operator. He is survived by his widow Della Johns two daughters Doris Hair Harriet Fry his mother a son Laurence and many nieces nephews plus grandchildren and great grandchildren. London UPI reports a new emergency dial a toastmaster service may soon be available to banquet organizers.

Boonville and Mendocino County fair books and local notes

Premium books for the 1971 Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show are ready for pickup in Boonville at the Fair office and in Ukiah at the farm advisor and chamber offices. Anderson Valley residents are urged to call for books due to mailing costs. Also listed are family trips, school registrations, visits, local honors, and church vacation school plans with various residents and events across Boonville and surrounding areas.

Crippled children veto stands in California Senate

The California Senate failed by one vote to override Governor Reagan's veto of extra state support for crippled children rehabilitation. The 26 to 14 defeat preserves the governor's cut of 500000 dollars, which officials say will not cut services but will raise parent contributions. Senator Teale criticized the move as giving the governor power to tax with no legislative approval. Socrates sentence and date noted in the same source.
