Unruh Takes Court Route Over California Adjournment

SACRAMENTO Assembly Speaker Jesse M. Unruh challenges the legality of Acting Gov Hugh M Burns order to adjourn the legislature while the Senate argues for adjournment. Only 53 of 80 Assembly members were present as Democrats claim the session is not legally in session. Republicans stall and accuse the speaker of maneuvering, while Burns and Reagan’s delegation attend the Republican National Convention. A court action to determine legality appears likely, with potential costs estimated around $300,000 if a 30 day recess occurs.
