Budget OKs over $1 million for Mendocino sheriff’s office
County supervisors approved a $1,024,495 budget for the Mendocino County sheriff's office, up $119,000 from last year. The board trimmed two sergeants but kept two clerks, and will hire four deputies and an extra sergeant from revenue-sharing funds. Overtime was cut to $75,000, while a jail budget dispute ended with an added overtime line.

Two Tennis Courts Planned for Low Gap Road Park
Bids will be opened Monday for construction of two tennis courts on county property south of the cemetery on Low Gap Road funded from the 1964 Park Bond Act. The county has 35000 in that fund for two courts a restroom and parking at the park entrance. If the low bid exceeds funds the project will be dropped. plans call for plexipave courts with a 12 foot chainlink fence and backboards later. The board of supervisors will decide Tuesday after the bid opening whether to proceed.

Courtesy costs driver his life in Mendocino County accidents
Two serious crashes in western Mendocino County left one man dead and another seriously hurt. Marvin Ray Wise of Santa Rosa died at Lakeside Hospital after his vehicle rolled on Hull Mountain Road while a passenger, Raymond Gallacher of Sonoma, survived with minor injuries. In a separate wreck on Erickson Ridge Road, Joseph Velvet of South San Francisco sustained possible pelvic fracture and fractured ribs. Velvet was found after several hours and listed in satisfactory condition at Hillside Hospital. Wise is survived by his wife and was taken to Eversole Mortuary in Ukiah.
