Ukiah rallied behind a strong pitching performance by Hawk who struck out ten while overcoming wildness early. San Francisco slides to a crucial twin bill defeat by the Milwaukee Braves at County Stadium as gaps widen in the pennant race. Juan Marichal’s latest surge helps push the Giants closer to Los Angeles, but injuries and late rallies sink them in game two. Sandford struggles in relief while Schofield and Davenport drive late rallies before O'Dell closes it out.
Ukiah Pony Niné-Drops lose to Napa 8 4 on Friday and 8 4 on Saturday, failing to defend Lake County in St Helena. Brice Zimmerman fanned 23 in seven innings Friday as Napa edged Ukiah 8 4. Jim Connor homered for Ukiah, but Napa pitcher Pete Forni sealed the win with late relief. Ukiah’s fielding miscues and missed double plays doom their playoff bid as Napa advances to Sebastopol for the district tourney with Sebastopol and Petaluma earning byes.
In Kiev the Soviet track team, led by coach Korobkov, upset the United States 318 to 112 to end seven years of U S defeats. Pyotr Bolotnikov beat Bob Schul in the 5000 meters as the Russians swept upsets and gained decisive depth over the Americans, who won only five of 11 events. The Russian women also won 63 to 43.
