In Hopland, Janice O Gaffney, 28, Ukiah, collided with Alice McMahan, 61, Hopland, after a passing maneuver, with Hopland driver slightly hurt and Richard O Gaffney, 6, taken for possible neck and side injuries. Dave Tipton, 48, Willits, rolled near Laughlin Way after erratic driving, treated for possible fractured collarbone.
Two county residents died by suicide over the weekend. James Patrick Morgan, 20, of Ukiah, was found Friday afternoon at a Boonville Road home with a shotgun used in the self-inflicted death. time of death around 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. Friday. He left no note. no reason given. Survived by mother Barbara Jeanne Morgan. Eversole Mortuary in Ukiah handling arrangements. John Howard Simpson, 48, of Hearst was found Saturday in a cabin near Hearst Motel, dying of a .22 rifle wound in the temple. A note cited he was tired of it all. His brother Edward of Shaver Lake is the nearest relative. Anker-Lucier Mortuary in Willits handling arrangements.

Thousands evacuated, hundreds injured, homes wrecked, and 700 plus structures damaged as experts search for remaining unexploded shells and caution residents about live charges.
Roy Irvin Mathers a 36 year old Ukiah police officer resigned this morning after being suspended for off duty misconduct. He had been booked on felony drunken driving following a 6 48 p m accident that sent four people to Hillside Hospital. The crash near the Talmage overpass involved a northbound 1970 Plymouth veering from the center line and injuring four occupants. Mathers was later released on his own recognizance. He had a long tenure in Ukiah and previously served as a police reservist before joining full time in 1970.
