Trustees receive a preliminary budget draft from business manager Walt Robie showing projected income near 1.3 million dollars. The plan aims to balance income and expenses within the 75 cent tax rate, with potential salary raises and a future reserve for a new campus site.
Mendocino County residents could qualify for food stamps with 10 138 people or 18.4 percent of the population affected. The plan replaces the commodity distribution system and would include many on welfare, medical aid, or other public assistance, though direct aid recipients are currently ineligible.
California Division of Forestry under Ray Hunter faces a resolution demand from the Employer Association. They fault his reorganization as capricious and arbitrary and criticize the demotion of State Forester Lew Moran to chief deputy. Moran’s successor requires State Board concurrence, while rangers petition Hunter for reconsideration. Copies of the resolution go to Gov Reagan and state and federal officials.
County supervisors endorse a Pacific Telephone Co request for PUC hearings on the impact of non telephone equipment. Ed Bean of Ukiah PST notes outside switchboards raise rate and network risks and urges full disclosure of effects on rates and the telephone network.
FBI says Patricia Hearst's 18 minute tape denouncing her father and fiancé and pledging loyalty to the Symbionese Liberation Army does not alter the investigation. Hearst calls the charges ridiculous and states she chose to participate in the April 15 bank robbery.
Ukiahi concert band and Pomolita junior high band travel to Santa Rosa for the California Music Educators Association State Festival. Ukiahi and Pomolita prepare Spring Concert and Art Show at Chessall gym next Tuesday with doors at 7 p.m. and music at 8. Exhibits by Ukiahi arts students run Tuesday, featuring paintings sculptures and other works. The festival assesses total performance quality and sight reading, with Ukiahi aiming to surpass last year’s top ratings and Pomolita seeking a strong showing before returning to Mendocino County pageant duties. Meanwhile water project plans note a 20 to 30 year horizon with potential Eel River diversions, drawing Humboldt County opposition and possible court action to defend water rights.
The House Judiciary Committee voted 34 to 4 to give President Nixon five more days to respond to a subpoena for 42 tapes totaling 1,600 minutes from 1973 conversations. The panel also considered dropping up to 30 charges to focus on criminal wrongdoing leading to impeachment. The new deadline requires surrender by April 30.
