The Ukiah Union Elementary School District will receive a 3530000 state loan for New Southside Elementary School with 151000 bond money to be added. The project includes 12 classrooms two kindergartens a multi purpose room and admin offices with detailed budget items for site acquisition development survey demolition classrooms and more.
The 40th U S Infantry Division will be relieved of duty in Korea on May 1 and sail home in early June. General Maxwell D Taylor 8th Army Commander announced the withdrawal with 56 officers and 100 enlisted men. The division, a former California National Guard unit, will sail about May 22 and arrive in San Francisco June 5.
Northern California remains fair through Saturday with coastal low clouds inland in mornings and cooler interior conditions. Winds vary 10-20 mph near coast, 20-35 mph north of Eureka. Bay Area shows fair weather with morning fog inland, little temperature change. San Francisco 62, Oakland 68, San Mateo 70, San Rafael 74, overnight low 55-60.
State Board of Equalization member Paul Leake, from the Third District, toured Ukiah and Lake County as a Democrat with strong Republican backing. He touted support from Victor Eickoff and George Hobart and urged voters to back a November Constitutional Amendment creating a state liquor department with a governor-appointed director and three appeal board members. He criticized the Beverage Control Act and urged bipartisan voting based on merit.

Ukiah Airport commission chair Schilder and Mayor Leonard Nix met with Congressman Hubert Scudder in Ukiah to push federal aid for extending the Ukiah Municipal Airport runway. Scudder pledged to press the federal government to honor commitments soon as Schilder campaigns for state senate, with stops in Potter Valley and prior visits to Lake County and the Mendocino coast.
In San Francisco a poorly dressed man attempted to rob the Hayes Street Bank of America. He flashed a large automatic and a demand note for 6500 dollars. The gun misfired and the thief fled. His getaway car was found abandoned near City Hall.
Articles of incorporation for Custom TV of Northern California a radio and television antenna distributing system were filed today with Secretary of State Frank M Jordan. The firm capitalizes for 150000 dollars. Directors are Robert and Elizabeth Dean 1801 South Dora street Ukiah and Larkin Younce P O Box 366 Ukiah.
H M Ivey city editor of the Journal, ill at his Jones street home since Sunday, was reported much improved today but still confined to his bed.
The California Highway Commission approves three highway projects totaling 4.105 million dollars. They include a new routing for a 3 mile section of State Highway 20 near Blue Lakes, a 4 mile Willits to Laytonville stretch with bridges over Outlet and Long Valley creeks, and a four lane link of 1.75 miles plus an overpass near Northwestern Pacific tracks linking to Forsythe Creek and Ridgewood summit. Completion depends on future state funds.
Fire of unknown origin burned a small tool shed of the Aborigine Lumber Company in Fort Bragg Tuesday night. Loss estimated at 1000 dollars, halting a day’s operation. Faulty wiring or spontaneous combustion suspected. The blaze was reported around 10 o’clock by Jacobsen, a nearby resident. Fort Bragg fire department received thanks for a speedy response that prevented further mill damage.
The Army said Camp Stoneman at Pittsburg will be inactivated and placed on standby by August 31. Reduced replacement flow to the Far East since the Korean conflict ended will be handled by Fort Lewis Washington Fort Ord and Oakland Army Base in California. All three posts are permanent.
In Indo-China near Dien Bien Phu, hundreds of French paratroopers arrived by American aircraft to reinforce the besieged garrison. The vanguard of about 1000 troops is being ferried from France and North Africa as Gen Giap’s forces press to isolate a French company at the airstrip. First airlift delivered 200 colonial troops. subsequent planes fly from Colombo to Saigon, with refueling at Colombo.
Rita Hayworth two young daughters Rebecca Welles age ten and Usmin Khan age four were placed in protective custody by the Westchester County Children's Court upon a petition by the County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Judge George W Smyth ordered the girls held in court custody pending a hearing next Tuesday after a neglect charge hearing. The girls had been living with Hayworth and her husband Dick Haymes in a New York hotel. they did not accompany the couple when they left weeks ago. The girls remained at the hotel with a governess. Mrs Amy Wager of Santa Rosa has been visiting the Bly family in Ukiah.
Washington report details Sen Joseph R McCarthy and Army Secretary Robert T Stevens clashing over an Army monitored telephone talk. Stevens quoted McCarthy discussing Schine favors and a penthouse arrangement at the Waldorf Astoria. The hearing debated admissibility under the federal communications act.
The Army presented recordings of Communist broadcasts as evidence that Cpl. Edward S Dickenson aided Red captors while a prisoner in Korea. Col C Robert Bard led the prosecution in the Crackers Neck Virginia case noting Dickenson voiced the Communist line in a U N troops broadcast and a Christmas message to his mother. Four former prisoners testified about incidents where they felt Dickenson aided captors by ratting on escape plans. Sgt Lyle W Jacobson of Butte Montana labeled him a rat for informing on friends.
Public invites for a non partisan Silver Tea at Surf Motel Gualala on April 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. to meet twenty candidates for public office and discuss policies in an informal setting. Organizers include Mrs Fred Holm and Mrs Theodore Deltorchio with local Republican Women assisting. Hostesses listed include Mrs Fred Bishop and Mrs Walter Stornetta.
San Francisco reports two criminologists testified that Harold Jackson, accused in the January kidnapping of Leonard Moskovitz, is an ex convict who served at San Quentin for armed robberies 1930 to 1933. They support the prosecution aim to prove Jackson as Hans M Anderson and to lengthen his term if found guilty. Jackson and Joseph Lear, 42, deny coercion and insist Moskovitz staged the event for extortion.
