Keene urges 200 mile limit to guard California seas

Assemblyman Barry Keene testified before a Senate Commerce subcommittee in San Francisco calling for an interim 200 mile coastal fisheries zone. He urged swift passage of a 1968 bill and warned foreign fleets threaten hake, ocean perch, salmon, and dungeness crab while U.S. vessels face restrictive rules. He warned delay could endanger coast resources.

Public Schools Month Open House Week in Ukiah Area

Ukiah area schools invite parents this week for open houses and student activities. River School starts with an evening program from 7 to 8. Redwood Valley and Oak Manor plan Tuesday open houses from 7 to 8:30 and 7 to 8 p.m. Frank Zeek hosts a 7:30 p.m. program Wednesday with science arts fair and band. Pomolita junior high holds a 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. science and art fair May 2.

Scuba tragedy claims Ukiah optometrist off San Clemente

Dr. Trevis Marsha 60s Ukiah optometrist drowned Saturday near San Clemente Island while scuba diving with Marv Bowen. Bowen reached Marsha, but despite Coast Guard assistance the victim did not recover. Surviving are his wife Ruby son Terry and mother May Morley. Funeral services pending.

Four rescued from river after canoe capsizes near Hopland

Sheriff's deputies pulled three survivors from a rock in the Russian River near Commiskey Station Road after their canoe overturned. A fourth swam to a small island and was later brought to shore. All four from southern California wore life jackets.

SLA threats vow 5 for 1 killings target California officers

A penciled note and taped message claimed by the Symbionese Liberation Army warned five California peace officers would be executed for every SLA member murdered. The communications dated April 17 and postmarked Berkeley April 19 were received by the Sacramento Bee and turned over to the FBI. The messages named General Pax and warned of nationwide tentacles, while asserting the SLA would not be crushed.

Ukiah Chamber Backs Fee Overhaul and Urban Renewal Talk

Greater Ukiah Chamber of Commerce directors backed the revised business license fee schedule with plans to seek an urban renewal study for downtown Ukiah. The move follows a city fee hike last year protested by merchants, with the chamber and Downtown Merchants Association aiding revision. Axt noted proposed renewal elements in the General Plan, while Schmitt urged the chamber to draft its own resolution. The group also reported progress on a new chamber office on Perkins Street to house Abbey Carpets and the county chamber.

County Supervisors Face Busy Day With Ordinance and Reports

County supervisors plan a full day with a smoking ordinance for county buildings up for approval including chambers ban and access areas. Untimed items include a Bureau of Reclamation Eel River study and a Sen John Tuhbey letter on Warm Springs Dam construction. Public Utilities Commission report, welfare building lease, revenue sharing request from Point Arena, and Fort Bragg dog pound status will be heard. At 1 30 p m Division of Highways plans improvements on Highway 101 Sonoma County line to Hopland.

Seven finalists vie for Miss Mendocino County title

Seven Mendocino County girls were named finalists for the Miss Mendocino County Pageant at Ukiah Fairgrounds. The event Saturday at Carl Purdy hall will feature talent, swimwear, and evening dress segments with Linda Thornquist performing last year’s gymnastics routine. Event host Gene Moretton and guests Vicky Greco will anchor the program. Tickets $2.50 adults $1.25 children, available at local chambers and sponsors.
