Carter’s plan would raise energy costs to curb consumption
President Carter urged Congress to curb the nation’s energy appetite by making gasoline heating oil natural gas and heavy cars far more expensive. He warned of a looming catastrophe as world oil supplies dwindle in the 1980s and said the package could cost 7 to 15 billion by 1935 with 1.2 to 2.6 billion in the coming fiscal year. Budget deficit seen near 45 to 46 billion dollars
