March CPI Up 1.1 Percent Third Highest in 27 Years

UPI reports the March cost of living rose 1.1 percent, led by food and gasoline, the CPI showing the third largest monthly gain in 27 years. Inflation and slow GNP growth added to two days of bad news for the U.S. economy.

Annexation move passes committee in California Community Colleges

California Community Colleges board members reviewed plans to annex coastal free territories into Mendocino College by 1975. A subcommittee approved Mendocino Lake county expansion without comment amid debates on Yolo county and San Diego areas. The board will study full county reports and reconvene in June, following 344 hours in executive session on personnel issues.

May 10 set as Liddy contempt trial date in Congress case

UPI reports Judge John H. Pratt denied Liddy bid to dismiss the contempt indictment and set May 10 for trial. Liddy faces two counts for refusing to testify before a House committee investigating CIA ties to Watergate and Ellsberg. If convicted he could face up to a year and fines up to $1,000 per count.

Fire regs suit set for hearing in Ukiah court

The owners of the Hospitality House motel sue Ukiah Valley Fire Protection District and Fire Inspector Gene Hassler seeking to overturn a requirement for a water and hydrant system capable of 3,000 gallons per minute for two hours. The $40,000 upgrade would delay opening past the tourist season. plaintiffs say they were not informed of the rule when a building permit was issued.
