San Francisco starts home schedule at Candlestick Park trailing the runaway St. Louis Cardinals by four games after a 1-5 road trip. Chicago and Cincinnati wins and injuries cloud Giants prospects as Willie Mays plans a hoped return in center field.
Philadelphia 76ers clamped down on defense to limit the San Francisco Warriors to 29.8 percent shooting and win 126 to 95 in Game 2 at Convention Hall. Wilt Chamberlain had 19 points and 26 first half rebounds, Hal Greer scored 30, while coaches Hanum and Sharman praised the defensive performance that gave Philadelphia a 2-0 series lead.
Middleweight champion Emile Griffith versus Italy’s Nino Benvenuti for the world title at Madison Square Garden. Griffith expected 2-1 favorite, lighter by seven pounds, with TV nationally. Benvenuti seeks the 160 pound limit in his U.S. debut, aiming to upset the veteran champ in the 15 round bout.
Lefty Steve Barber nearly no-hit the California Angels as the Baltimore Orioles won 3-0 in game two of a doubleheader. Jim Fregosi spoiled the bid with a ninth inning double. The opener saw a 5-4 Angels victory after back-to-back homer bursts by Cardenal and Mincher.
Debbie Mayer of the Arden Hills Swim Club California set an American record in the 1650 yard freestyle with 17 minutes 38.1 seconds at the national AAU women's swimming championships in Cleveland Ohio.
Imagine Willis Reed Lucious Jackson Leroy Ellis in the New York ABA lineup. Mark Einstein says Ellis signed from the Baltimore Bullets while NBA money talks draw stars away. The fledgling league lures players with contracts pensions and possible coaching moves amid speculation on Havlicek Robertson Barry Thurmond and others.
Roger Rouse from Anaconda Montana outpointed Henry Hank of Detroit in a 10 round lightweight bout. Ramon Lacruz of Argentina outpointed L Morgan of Youngstown Ohio in a 10 round featherweight bout. Gerhard Zech of Germany knocked out Peter Weiland in seven rounds at Kiel Germany.
Ukiah and Hogan opened the North Bay League baseball season with a 4-4 nine inning tie. Ukiah’s nine, aided by strong hitting and solid pitching from Alan Estes who fanned 13, battled Hogan who had four hits and 10 strikeouts. The game featured errors and late rallies, with Ukiah scoring a tying run in the seventh before the game ended.
The tallest player ever in the league was Swede Halbrook a seven foot three inch center who played for Syracuse.
United Press International reports the Western Hockey League playoffs began with Vancouver defeating California Seals 4-1 in Seattle to take a 4-1 semifinal series lead. Stan Gilbertson opened scoring for the Seals, Larry Lund equalized, and Bob Leminx and Chuck Holmes added second period goals for Seattle. Holmes scored again in the third as Seattle sealed the win.
Beard wins the 15th annual $100 Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas by one stroke over Arnold Palmer. Beard finishes with 278 total, six under par, after rounds of 65 68 74 71 for an $8,000 first prize. Palmer’s final round 64 sets a course record but he finishes eight strokes behind. Beard admits nerves while acknowledging the high stakes and his calm finish.
In Oakland Coliseum the California Clippers drew 9 771 paying fans for MeSean s debut, as the Clippers and Pittsburgh Phantoms tied 3 3 with all Phantoms goals coming in a 17 minute second half surge. The event kicks off a schedule highlighting Tuesday's clash with the New York Generals at the same venue.
