Willits Covelo meetings on Eel Basin planning input

Citizens gathered at the Willits Community Center to aid a U S Corps of Engineers study session on Eel River Basin management. Attendees included Ernie Banker and Al Barbero, plus Ron Rucker and Gary Bruchler, with 50 people present and representatives from fishing groups and environmentalists. A Covelo session was held the night before.

Board delays stance on Prop 20 initiative

County supervisors will wait to take a position on repealing Prop 20 until the initiative qualifies for the November ballot. The legislative committee urged no stand yet and endorsed CSAC sponsored bills to phase out the Coastal Zone Act over three years. The report warns that failure to act would waste years of work and millions in coastal planning.

Zoning administrator resigns as plans reorganized

Mendocino County supervisors acknowledged Zoning Administrator Bill Randolph will resign effective July 10, amid a board backed plan to merge the planning and building inspection departments. Planning Director Ron Hall also cited personal reasons for leaving July 10. The board approved creating a unified Department of Community Development with division chiefs, while denying any forced removals.

Ford signs 200 mile limit bill

Washington senators and President Ford enacted a law extending U S fishing jurisdiction to 200 miles offshore effective March 1 1977. The act aims to protect dwindling marine resources and curb foreign fishing. Magnuson praised the long effort and the support of fishermen officials and their families including wives who stood by the cause.

Golden to seek retention as Lake County Superior Court judge

Lakeport judge John J. Golden, appointed in 1974, announced plans to seek retention in the June 8 primary. He cited eliminating backlogs through calendar management, multiple trial settings, mandatory settlement conferences, speedy criminal dispositions, and longer court hours, noting improved congestion and prompt hearings. Golden’s career spans 23 years in private practice, leadership roles in the State Bar, plus Mendocino County Bar Association presidency. He and his wife Gail reside in Lakeport with two young sons. a daughter at UC Berkeley and another at UC Davis.

City planners hold an 8 PM session at city hall to review the final environmental impact report and tentative map for Oak Manor Unit No 4 a 36 parcel subdivision between Oak Manor Drive and the freeway A zoning change from C 1 light commercial to R 2 multiple family is requested by Kennedy Homes Also on the agenda are a use permit for staged tennis courts on Cleveland Lane a General Plan text amendment a R 1 to R 2 zone change for a Barnes Hope Church Perkins block a nine unit Empire Development Co project at 735 South Dora and use permits for automotive service at East Perkins Scott and North State Streets with site plans and elevations hearings to follow.

Ukiah Unified Board of Education elected officers for 1976 77 with Virginia Maurer as president Jon Green as vice president and Margaret Hoaglen as clerk of record The meeting highlighted a two hour MGM mentally gifted minors program plan and the loss of state funding for expanding Early Childhood Education to Calpella in 76 77 The district faces a $50 000 to $80 000 shortfall and will pursue compensation from PV for bid delays while exploring MGM expansions and enrollment adjustments
