North state forecast notes partly cloudy conditions with a chance of showers tonight and Tuesday. Cooler air remains in place as temperatures dip, with Fort Bragg recording 40 and 54 for today and tomorrow, and Ukiah at 37 and 54.

Ukiah man faces charges after alleged welfare worker beating

Ukiah man George K. Asman, 23, is to be arraigned on misdemeanor assault and resisting arrest charges after allegedly beating eligibility worker Nancy Shoush at the Social Services department on Main Street Friday. Asman was subdued by staff, jailed, and attempted suicide by hanging in a cell before his 7:30 p.m. arraignment. the victim was treated and released from Mendocino Community Hospital. Dennis Denny, Social Services director, vowed prosecution and praised police quick response.

Bus Drivers Strike Adds to San Francisco Woes

A strike by suburban commuter bus drivers worsened San Francisco transit woes. Traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge surged early as thousands left Marin for the city. 6 to 8 p.m. flow reached 12,699, about 3,000 above normal. Three hundred drivers began walking out at midnight over wages, with base pay at $17,300 and total compensation up to $26,000. Local 1225 rejected a 27 month offer that would rise to $28,500.

Hearst sentenced to 35 years with psychiatric review

Patricia Hearst is sentenced by U S District Judge Oliver Carter to 35 years for armed bank robbery and use of a firearm, with a plan for 90 days of psychiatric study before final sentencing. The judge may reduce the term but will not place her on probation, citing the jury verdict as the basis for continued detention. Hearst will plead in Los Angeles on Wednesday to robbery, kidnapping, and assault charges.

Navy POW camp trainees starved and tortured, suit filed

Wendell R. Young, a Navy pilot and former Boulder resident, alleges trainees at a Warner Springs California simulated POW camp were starved, forced to desecrate the flag, and subjected to water-board torture. He filed a $15 million suit and seeks federal investigation. Navy denies flag desecration and sex torture claims, cites two-decade training value. Young pushed lawmakers and the ACLU for review.

Delegates picked in Ukiah caucuses for Carter Brown Udall

A 2nd district caucus sweep chose 10 Carter delegates led by Johnney Brooks and included Denise Durrett and Richard Nelson in Ukiah. Brown supporters topped Mendocino Lake Clubhouse results with Barry Keene as chair and 9 others. Udall caucus at Palace Hotel named Bill Lynch chair with 8 more delegates. Carter backers praised broad support while Udall backers aimed to build momentum before the June 8 primary and July convention in New York.

Ukiah Unified Board of Education to elect officers

The Ukiah Unified Board of Education will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the district office to elect officers for the 1976-77 year and hear multiple reports. Readouts include enhanced learning programs, an Early Childhood Education master plan, Indian Education funding, needs assessments, Bicentennial reports, and Public Schools Week plans.
