Downtown Santa Rosa Urges Renewal Plan For Ukiah Growth

Santa Rosa urban renewal director James K. Burns tells Chamber members to study downtown Ukiah for redevelopment. He cites four elements leadership planning funding and implementation and details a $115 million plan to attract federal funds, create 3,000 jobs, and boost tax revenues.

Good Friday Services at Assembly in Ukiah

The Ukiah Ministerial Association sponsors a Good Friday service from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Assembly of God, 395 N Barnes St. Pastor W. Cornish Jones will speak on the crucifixion. Special music by Pastor Alvin Winkle and Mrs. Everet Witzel. Other pastors from First Christian, United Methodist, Nazarene, and The Assembly of God participate. Open to all unaffiliated Christians.

Public hearing on Ukiah General Plan scheduled for April 22

The Ukiah General Plan public hearing will be held Monday April 22 at 7 30 p m in the Veterans building on Seminary Avenue. The citizens advisory committee approved forwarding the GP to planners with several scenic highway deletions. The plan will go to the city council for a hearing after planning commission concurrence and possible further hearings if council changes are not approved.

Future of 101 Hopland meet topic

County supervisors were informed that the Division of Highways may alter Highway 101 from the Sonoma County line to south of Hopland, switching plans to an expressway alignment due to reduced gas tax funds. A meeting for informational purposes is tentatively set for April 23 at Hopland Elementary School. Lorraine Pearson and Councilmen Sterling Norgard and Barry Wood attended, with Rich Avey and Carol Walker also present.

Lions Egg Hunt Sunday at Ukiah City Park

The Ukiah Lions Club sponsors a 2 p.m. Sunday Easter egg hunt at the city park and golf course. Children aged 1 to 7 will search in age designated zones for chocolate and marshmallow treats with prizes for the first finders. General chairs are Gary Nix, Rick Eversole, Jim Lee, Dan Cohen, and Dave Strong.

Kiryat Shemona raid leaves dozens dead in apartment siege

Three Arab guerrillas seized a three story apartment building in Kiryat Shemona near the Lebanese border and killed 21 residents, with 18 others fatally or seriously hurt, before their own belts exploded as Israeli troops closed in. The attack lasted about four and a half hours and drew a protest from Golda Meir as the nation faced a political crisis.

Judge Rules California School Financing Unconstitutional

A Superior Court judge in Los Angeles ruled that California's new school financing plan SB 90 violates the state constitution by funding wealthier districts more than poorer ones. The decision, focusing on equality of educational opportunity, may be appealed to the California Supreme Court.

Murphy hails Serrano-Priest ruling on school funding

Ukiah Superintendent W O Murphy says the Serrano-Priest decision supports narrowing the funding gap between rich and poor districts without cutting programs. He notes SB 90 raises local aid by about 15 percent while high costs in Mendocino remain, and says new building bonds could boost education at lower unit cost within constitutional limits.
