Sunlit days end with local woes and civic damage

A warm spell sparked light sunburns and Spring fever while Friday brought accidents and fires. A truck struck a south Talmage Bridge guard rail near Perkins and the railroad tracks, and a blackened building burned Friday night near the waterfront. Kermit Brown’s pink and white cherry tree on North Pine 400 block is in full bloom after careful grafting.

Mendocino-Lake Cancer Crusade picks Wally Francis as chairman

Wally Francis, assistant administrator at Hillside Community Hospital, becomes 1971 Crusade chairman for the American Cancer Society Mendocino-Lake County unit. Charles Mannon announces the appointment. Francis stresses the need for continued federal cancer research funding and public support to fight the disease through education, research, and patient services.

Eleven nabbed on drugs charges in Willits burglary case

Sheriff deputies rounded up eleven suspects after a Camp Serenity burglary near Hearst Road led to drug and stolen property charges. Arrested from Willits were David Lawrason, James Shuda, Patrick King, Samuel Walter, Diane Chase, Rosemary Ross, Lee Smith, Marc Schultz, Theodore Mitchell, Joseph Ceratto, and a 15-year-old juvenile. Ten adults face marijuana and narcotics paraphernalia charges. Lawrason and Shuda face extra counts of stolen property. The March burglary reportedly targeted kerosene lamps and tools valued at $100.

Eureka man attempts death by own action on Talmage Road

CHP investigated two weekend accidents in the Ukiah area with one injury case. Walter Bartella, 34, Eureka, was taken to Mendocino Community Hospital after allegedly jumping in front of a westbound pickup driven by Jose Vasques, 42, Ukiah. Bartella reportedly admitted to trying to jump in front of other approaching cars during the incident. Nearby, a non injury car-train collision north of Hopland occurred around 8:30 p.m. as a freight struck a stalled vehicle abandoned by two occupants seen fleeing.

Suspect Held for Assault in Leggett Lodge Incident

Robert Henry La Motte 27 of Leggett was arrested after a fistfight at a Leggett lodge and charged with assault and battery. James Campbell, also of Leggett, identified as victim, made the citizen's arrest. Bail set at 125 dollars. La Motte jailed as authorities pursue two fleeing suspects linked to a train collision scene traced to A Hernandez of Oakland.

Final services for John Johnson in Ukiah

Final services were held at Eversole Mortuary for John Sigmond Johnson 89 of Ukiah who died Thursday. Superior Judge Wayne Burke and Rev Travis Hyatt officiated with burial at Ukiah Cemetery. He lived and ranching in Ukiah for 80 years. Survivors include Lena Johnson four daughters Della Day Vera Graham Ida King Barbara Brown two sons Robert and William Johnson, 15 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Death summons Monk Fisher funeral rites planned

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Eversole Mortuary for Monk Lester Fisher 85 of Calpella who died Saturday in a Ukiah hospital. A California native and lifelong laborer, he will be buried in Ukiah Cemetery with the Rev. Travis Hyatt officiating. Survived by a brother Ira Fisher and several nieces and nephews.

Ukiah couple arrested for child neglect charges

Ukiah area residents John Albert Turner and Susan Turner were arrested on a Ukiah Justice Court warrant for contributing to the delinquency of a minor after allegedly leaving their child unattended at home. Deputies Murrell Agenbroad and Janice Johnson booked them in county jail with bail set at $625 each.

Cecil Janusz Dies at 59. Rites Planned for Tuesday

Cecil Marie Janusz 59 of Hopland died Saturday in a local hospital after residing 23 years in Hopland. Survivors include husband Casimir and two sons William and Allen, plus sisters Eulah Pease and Ruthe Stargar and mother Mrs Anna Allen. Rites Tuesday at Zimmerran Mortuary at 1 p.m. conducted by Rev Robert L. Harrell with burial in Hopland.

Coast Infant Dies in Albion Ridge Fire

The 20 month old Sethia Finn Cahn, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Robert Cahn of Albion, died in a house fire on Albion Ridge Road near Highway 1. The death occurred about 9 p.m. with funeral services pending at Cain, Grove and Haverfield Mortuary in Fort Bragg.
