UPI reports police searched the White House press center after the switchboard received a bomb threat. Officers combed the upper and lower floors and then left. official comment was not immediately available.
The Senate Banking Committee heard Kenneth T. Rosen of Princeton University say in nine years the median price for a new house will approach 90 000 dollars and the average downpayment will near 23 000 dollars, excluding many young families from the market.
A seven point earthquake struck Bandar Abbas Iran at 6 p.m. local time, damaging many buildings after a series of tremors during the Iranian New Year. Aftershocks followed with no immediate casualty reports.
Edgar Herbert Smith Jr. was convicted of attempted murder and kidnapping with intent to rob a seamstress last October after a 14 year fight to avoid execution. John Stetson was approved as Air Force secretary by the Senate Armed Services Committee and said he opposed women in combat.
Louanna Messiner 28 of Talmage Road pleads guilty before Superior Judge Tim O'Brien to four counts of embezzling cash from the medical clinic where she served as chief bookkeeper. She faces a maximum four year sentence under the new determinate sentencing law and is to report for probation and sentencing April 22. A prior 20 count case was reduced to four in what her attorney described as a plea, not a bargain. A civil action to recover property includes confiscated Cadillacs and a Hustler car stored in the county garage.
In a Thursday policy move the county planning commission approved requiring aerial photographs on all planning department applications with the cost borne by the applicant. The six commissioners present unanimously backed the rule applying to rezonings use permits minor divisions subdivisions and agricultural preserves. The policy followed a prior aerial photo from the assessor’s office purchased in 1972. Also approved were findings denying Las Brisas Unit No 3 subdivision due to water shortages and a 30 year use permit for Redwood Health Club south of Ukiah near State Street and the 101 overpass.

Dutch reporter Willem Oltmans testified before the House Assassination Committee that George De Mohrenschildt conspired with Lee Harvey Oswald to kill President Kennedy. He said De Mohrenschildt claimed Oswald acted under guidance in Dallas February 1963 and that anti Castro Cubans and Texas oilmen joined the plot. De Mohrenschildt died before testifying.
Assembly Democrats deliver a broad tax reform package to Gov Brown proposing local income taxes with a 15 percent cap, relief for homeowners and renters, and a constitutional amendment to allow split tax rolls. The plan would raise about 210 million from higher incomes, buy out a third of county welfare costs, and redirect two thirds via a statewide business tax.
A 26 year old Santa Maria man was killed when his foreign convertible left Highway 101 north of Willits at 3:30 a.m. The car crossed the northbound lane, rode the east shoulder, and plunged down a 15 to 20 foot embankment. He was ejected and the vehicle rolled over him before the body was taken to Anker Lucier Mortuary.
Gov. Jerry Brown announced reappointment of Bob Runnings of Potter Valley to a four year term on the Redwood Empire Fair board of directors. Mikela Holloman of Covelo was appointed to fill the second vacancy created when Francis Gibson resigned. Holloman and her husband Paul manage the Harwood Enterprises Big Ben Ranch in Round Valley and have lived in Covelo for four years.
A 16 year old Highlands youth died after a dune buggy carrying two others rolled over on Old Highway 53 near Ridgeview Drive. Vernon Ferrer 17 and Tom Ferrer 18 of Lower Lake were hospitalized as investigators determine the driver. The southbound 3:54 p.m. crash remains under investigation.
