Grocers seek to restrict packers and railroads
The National Wholesale Grocers Association opened its case before an interstate commerce commission hearing in Chicago on March 26 urging restriction of packers cars to fresh meats and packing house products. Counsel Clifford Thorne proposed excluding canned vegetables soups butter cheese oils and canned meats with vegetable ingredients from ships. Swift and Company counsel said the Palmer agreement covers the situation. Interior Town Packers representatives noted only one client falls under the Palmer pact, others would continue business until barred. A Morris and Company official warned that prohibiting sideline manufacture would raise costs as packers fill cars with meat only.
