Dairy Owners Seek Independence From Milk Distributors

New York and five neighboring states see a big step toward independence as 83,000 Dairyman's League members push to own 12 cooperative plants and launch a 1 million dollar drive to establish 13 new sites. The plan covers fluid milk stations, butter and cheese factories, and powder and evaporated milk plants, turning farmers into manufacturers and promising fairer prices, lower costs, and steadier markets. An order for 6 million cans of sweetened condensed milk from the American Relief Administration adds about 1.5 million dollars in value to the effort.

Roberto Pesquera, financing agent for Mexico in the United States, labeled conditions in northern Mexican border states immoral and disorderly. He cited signposts to Tia Juana warning “To Mexico the road to hell” and alleged rampant rapine in Juarez and Torreon, plus a gambling concession that yields 11,500 dollars monthly and offers 50,000 dollars for renewed privilege. He also accused labor agents and some American merchants of exploiting Mexican workers and inflating invoices, saying officials are complicit in draining the national treasury.
