For 1944 45 three scholarships are offered to five year engineering students two for non residents outside St Johns and one for city students. Values are 250 dollars per year and 100 dollars per year respectively and may be renewed for one or two subsequent years. Applications in writing should be addressed to the President of Memorial University College.
The season opens on calmer water with ice gone and less hazard from icebergs and large pans. Marine circles report minimal ice on the north and Labrador seas, reducing interruptions for fishermen compared with last year.

Claude Frazer died at S Joho's on Thursday week. Former Secretary to the Dept of Natural Resources he resigned months ago to head the Nild Industrial Development Board. He was buried at St John's on Saturday. He visited this town about four years ago. We regret his passing.
Victor Newman of Toronto Ontario has been commissioned as Sub Lieutenant after a year at St. John’s. He returns to Canada to rest his duties. His sister Dorothy Newman graduated in Ottawa as Paymaster Sub Lieutenant. Brother L A C Holgar serves in the R C A F. They are children of Mr and Mrs William Newman formerly of the town.
