Importation of Salt Policy Shifts to Private Firms

For four years ongoing salt shortages due to naval supply gaps have seen the Newfoundland Fisheries Board oversee import of mineral salt from Detroit funded by a levy on codfish and fishery product exports. With postwar supplies improving and prices pegged previously, the government ends its import program and returns the duty to private enterprise while requiring import licenses from the Board. A future update will address fishery salt stocks and potential levy removal.

Government approves plan to train twenty ex servicemen yearly for three years at a farm near St Mount Pearl for fur ferrying. Establishment details indicate a new training site and program scope.

St John's fur farm training offers grants and conditions

The program covers breeding care and feeding of foxes and tink with a training period beginning in 1946. Trainees receive monthly maintenance allowances less 30 dollars for board, and those who qualify may obtain a free grant up to 500 dollars on a dollar basis, including 150 dollars of foundation stock. Ex servicemen near cold storage get priority for refrigeration related efforts. Applications to the Secretary for Natural Resources in St Johns must arrive by 15 June 1946.

Boiler Inspection Notice under Newfoundland Statutes

Public notice warns boiler owners in Newfoundland and Labrador that using a boiler before receiving a properly signed inspection certificate may incur up to one hundred dollars in penalties per day. It cites Sections 8 and 10 of Chapter 202 on the inspection of boilers and obligates certificate holders to comply with conditions.

Regulation 4 amended May 19 1942 in Newfoundland Gazette. Salmon season extended from 15 May to 30 September. All other trout including sea trout now open 15 January to 30 September.
