The Twillingate Sun prints department notices from the North Side office and warns that letters or communications arriving after Wednesday noon may not be inserted. Notes of Thanks Memoriam Notes and Announcements cost 25 cents each, and the paper does not assume responsibility for correspondents opinions.
In Newfoundland five years of a Commission role faced adverse natural and economic factors delaying rehabilitation. Bad fisheries, weak marketing, labour curtailment, newsprint surpluses, and relief costs strained finances despite British Treasury aid and UK support to avert bankruptcy. A major fire at Doctor Olds’s Memorial Hospital residence destroyed belongings, with several staff affected and limited salvaged items. wind aided containment and insurance covered about $280,000 of a $5,000 value.
Major Ebenezer Hiscock of the Salvation Army died in Toronto on February 10. A native of Newfoundland, he served before the war in Twillingate and rose to Adjutant. After almost fifty years in service he retired ten years ago. He leaves a widow and one adopted daughter.
Long Point reported that only eighteen men were rescued by the Newfoundland to date as a towne shopped while trying to tow the Ranger into smoother water. No ice nearby, Ranger strained by heavy sea and high wind. The ship, launched in 1872, commanded by Captain P Mullowney, had carried 16 345 seals. S.S Imogene left St Johns Thursday morning and was alongside next morning but could not aid until wind abated Friday afternoon. The Ranger then remained afloat off the East side of the Bay above St Marty’s.
8 S Imogene receives a standard Marconi direction finder for the sealing voyage. Neptune Eagle and Ranger steamer sets are equipped with new 00 watt Marconi valve transmitters.
The Commissioner for Public Utilities proposes to submit a bill to move Newfoundland traffic from left to right driving. The notice argues better signaling, reduced ditch risks, and easier door operation if drivers sit on the side toward oncoming traffic. Change would affect existing vehicles and imports, with final decision after public consideration. If approved, effect date not earlier than May 1. R. Manning secretary for public works.
The act passed December 31 1938 applies to Twillingate and northern districts. It requires dogs to be tethered or penned unless under immediate control with magistrate allowed exemptions. Penalties include fines up to twenty five dollars and possible imprisonment.
Magistrate Abbott received a tele gram from Constable Harvey at Fogo reporting six men from Joe Batt's Arm in a small boat missing on the ice since the day prior. A search party was authorized and a later message said the men had landed safely at Barr'd Telands that morning.
Miss Wavy Day left Saturday morning to pursue study elsewhere. Norse Thompson visited St. John's for a time. Miss Blanche Blandford arrived Saturday from the United States.
Messages say two of eight Norwegian sealers en route to the Pearl coast are in distress 300 miles off Greenland at latitude 59 north longitude 34 17 west with crews unknown. Other items note government officials traveling, new staff appointments, and World War II era updates across Newfoundland and Europe.
Port-aux-Basques reports that about 30 fishermen and fish merchants from the south coast voiced unanimous in principle support for proposals by General Sea Foods Corporation to build a fish processing plant on the south coast. Two sub committees will report on site and raw material supply.
Former resident Elizabeth Ann Slade died at St John's on Saturday aged 77. She leaves her husband, a daughter, a son, four sisters including Mrs Jane Barrett of this town, and two brothers. Funeral was held Monday from 46 Hayward Ave.
The North Side and South Side United Churches welcomed Miss Etta Campbell W.M.S. Worker for the Twillingate Presbytery as she gave timely Lent and Easter oriented addresses. The Pastor introduced her and led the services.
Merars John Barrett Max Haw kinds and Alfred Young run passenger and freight transport from Lewisporte amid slow progress for wood haulers and cutters. Reginald Reid escorted Dr Ecke to Fortuse Harbour to visit Mrs Fowlow. Hyde from Change Islands to hospital for appendicitis. Patrick Miller traveled from Fogo for shoulder treatment. Skipper Stephen Goodyear visited Carmanville. Jasper Chaulk visited his son Ray in hospital. George Chaulker and wife from Cobb's Arm in town. Stephen Loveridge, dog team with Edward Anstey, reports a heavy thunderstorm near Corner Brook at midnight on the fourth.
The Mid Lum bermen's Association meeting moved from February 6 to March 6. All members are urged to attend at the usual time and place.
