Public notice announces first and second reading of a bill titled An Act Relating to an Export Levy Upon Sealskins and Certain Fishery Products. It provides objects and reasons and invites written comments to the Secretary for Natural Resources by August 29, 1942, D. H. Dunn, Commissioner for Natural Resources.
The bill imposes a levy on products using salt in curing besides codfish and friends. A fund will receive levy proceeds to cover extraordinary salt import costs from higher freight and insurance, and to offset new supply sources due to shipment port restrictions.
The bill imposes an export levy on salted sealskins and salted or pickled fish through July 1, 1943. It specifies charges of five cents per sealskin and per various barrel or half barrel quantities of herring, mackerel, salmon, and turbot, payable to the Collector of Customs before export entry.
The Collector of Customs shall refuse entry and payments to the Commissioner for Natural Resources come from exporters under Section 1 of this Act. The Commissioner shall apply sums, with Governor in Council approval, to aid the fishing industry as existing or may be made. The Act may be cited as The Sealskin and Fishery Products Levy Act 1942.
Report states Prime Minister Churchill met with Stalin in Moscow and traveled back through Cairo. A birth notice records the surname Anstey with a daughter born to Mr and Mrs Ernest Anstey on August 19.
Ronald Tulk of St John's, son of Samuel and Mrs Tulk, is engaged to Miss Helen Foote of Carbonear, nurse Rose Peyton is engaged to Dr J Arch McNamara of St John's, son of Hon Frank McNamara. Two Newfoundlanders now head the Board of Customs with Chairman W H Hutchings and Secretary J Howell.
The Department of Defence ordered a suspension of RAF Aircraft Crews recruitment after 80 applicants remained awaiting entry to training schools in the United Kingdom and Canada, which were already at capacity.

Miss Eileen Dove of Chanceport married Mr. Bred Doggett of the RCAF last week at Grand Falls. She has served on the staff of Cabot House.
