A serious forest fire threatened Newport and Wesleyville early in the week. Equipment was rushed to the area on Sunday to assist. Coal operations resumed at North Sydney on Monday as miners returned from a fortnight holiday. Several vessels are now en route to load coal.

Bell Island plans plebiscite polling set for August twenty eighth
A Bell Island committee completed plebiscite arrangements. Polling day is Thursday August 28 with voter cards mailed from the 1946 list. Any resident over 21 and on the island for a year is eligible to vote. Local Bay firms sell mackerel salted and barrelled at fifteen to sixteen dollars per barrel.
