Fifty Years Of Mining At Bell Island

A Bell Island anniversary marks half a century of mining at Wabana since July 6 1893 when the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company opened the first cod. Iron pyrites and copper had earlier been mined at other Newfoundland sites but ceased long ago. Many pioneer workers remained in the community and native Bell Island residents also reached the fifty year milestone in the industry.
