Abbey Faces Fit After Monastery Expansion Plans
The St Michael's Abbey dispute centers on preserving wildlife habitat and rural character as plans for a private school and monastery move forward. Originating from Hungarian Norbertine refugees in 1950, the order now includes 48 priests and 27 seminarians. The junior seminary evolved into a preparatory school once housing 85 students, but a 1998 collapse reduced enrollment and forced downsizing.

Abbey move sparks debate over Holtz Ranch plans
St Michael's Abbey aims to relocate seven miles north to Holtz Ranch in Silverado Canyon, proposing a 124 acre development with a new school, housing for 85 priests, mass attendance facilities, and 603 trees to be planted. Environmentalists warn of habitat disruption for the arroyo toad and await U.S. Army Corps and Fish and Wildlife reviews before ground breaking hoped for in 2014.
