The Senate approved actions overriding a veto on an HEW bill expanding unemployment benefits and restricting dual unemployment and retirement payments. It also advanced civil rights enforcement allowing attorney fees to successful private plaintiffs and taxpayers in IRS suits.
About 3.4 million federal employees earning under 47 500 annually will get a 4 pay increase starting tomorrow. President Ford ordered a 4.83 percent boost for civilian and military staff, affecting roughly 1.4 million civilians and 2 million military personnel with rates from 4.24 to 7.92 percent across grades. Congress had previously rejected a similar boost for higher officials including judges and cabinet members.
William and Emily Harris, already jailed for SLA activities, face a three count indictment charging the kidnapping of newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst.
