Faubus Defends Action Over Little Rock Violence

Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus told southern governors at Sea Island that the Little Rock school integration violence shows the need for the National Guard he first requested. He blamed local police for delays and said further action would be left to Lt. Gov. Gordon. He noted no request for Guardsmen at the high school had been made.

Huachuca Soldier Dies From Flu Complication

Pvt. Kenneth N. Rockstroh, 22, of Danville Illinois, died at Fort Huachuca Army post hospital from acute overwhelming pneumonia after influenza. The post reports 350 military cases with 275 discharged. civilians show 120 children and 270 adults infected. Vaccine shipments are expected, and health officials urge home care for mild cases. Rockstroh’s father Kenneth W. Rockstroh of Danville survives.

Flu Outbreak Closes Clifton High School

Clifton High School closed today due to a flu outbreak described as Asian type. Superintendent Guido Cislagi ordered the plant shut on medical advice as 145 of 285 students were absent. Elementary schooling was not closed despite 119 of 785 absent. Morenci reports no serious outbreak though elementary cases rise.
