John C. Leonard defeated Justice Robert O. Lesher 120 to 113 to become chairman of the Pima County Republican Committee. The meeting, held at Mansfeld Junior High, also saw remarks by Gov. Paul Fannin and candidate Richard Burke as they endorsed party unity and regional leadership ahead of the 1964 election cycle.
The Diocese of Tucson via Catholic Charities announces the purchase of El Rincon Lodge at North Isl Ave and East Adams Street. It will be named Villa Maria de Guadalupe Nursing Home & Apartments and run by four Sisters of the Minimas de Maria Immaculada from Mexico. The lodge is a former Southern Methodist Hospital, bought with funds from the Bishop's Charity and Development Fund, and will house 56 beds plus 31 apartments for seniors, open to all races and religions.
Former member Marie Taylor sues Catholic Daughters of America unit in Court of Superior, alleging on Sept 20 1960 trustees called her to account after an audit revealed discrepancies. Defendants include state regent Anne McCarthy and 110 officers and trustees. Taylor resigned in May 1961 over alleged irregularities in records.
Arizona expects no Mexican braceros for the cotton harvest for the first time in state history. 4500 braceros last year compared with a shift to machine picking. Higher wage rules and machine use reduce reliance on Mexican migrant labor, with 48 percent of acreage harvested by machines this year.
The suit alleges Mrs McCarthy created discord within the Catholic Daughters of America and suspended Mrs Taylor before a trial, violating organization rules and without proper authority. The case centers on internal due process and alleged improper disciplinary action.
