Phoenix report shows Arizona industrial commission facing insolvency with the majority unable to offer concrete recommendations. The interim committee pressed for action and awaited further information on possible legal or administrative changes.
A California woman 63 identified as Edith Kindig of Long Beach died at Grand Canyon after a fall from Yaqui Point. Coroner S. G. Stephens ruled a heart attack likely caused the accident. husband Frank nearby but did not witness the moment. Rangers recovered the body after a strenuous search under acting chief ranger W. J. Kennedy.
The Senate voted 43 to 38 to reject a Republican Milli kin amendment that would limit tariff cuts under reciprocal trade agreements. The administration sought a free hand for negotiating tariffs, while Democratic Leader Lucas argued for presidential flexibility and praised Western alliance progress.
Herbert H. Lehman 73, former governor and financier, was nominated by the Democratic state committee to run for the U.S. Senate in November. ECA to finance about 30 million in ocean transport for Britain.
News wires report Capt. John G. Crommelin, a veteran navy flier, is removed from his Pentagon staff post after an unauthorized attack on unification. He had accused the army and air force of colluding to seize defense power.
A Tucson city council backed a uniform street naming and numbering plan by the mayor's committee after 18 months of study. The plan renames only streets with multiple names, uses Pioneer Boulevard for First Avenue, sets house numbers at 1 000 per mile, and keeps most historical names while simplifying cross streets at one mile intervals.
Fire Chief Clifford R. Pender inspecting a 75 pound carbon dioxide extinguisher in a hangar was knocked to the floor when the pressure tank exploded. He suffered a ruptured eardrum and bruised back. Dr. Delbert Secrist treated him and sent him home. A plugged hose caused the blast.
SAN PEDRO Calif September 15 The army may be returning to suits of armor Maj. Gen. W H Middleswart of the quartermaster general s office disclosed the development of bullet resistant body armor for soldiers made of plastic and nylon The general said the cloth like substance will resist a .45 caliber bullet fired from only 15 feet away The material is nearly a quarter inch thick.
Police filed first degree burglary and grand theft charges against Daniel W. Evans for allegedly stealing a 470 pound safe containing about $11,000 from Pacific Finance Loan Co. Evans, 23, requested a preliminary hearing and was arraigned before Justice Clark H. Johnson. Bond was set at $3,000. The safe was taken Sept. 7 and found hours later south of town. An eye witness said a man unlocked the door and moved the safe into a sedan. Detectives pursued leads for eight days amid circumstantial evidence. Evans lives at 847 North Norris Ave and says he is innocent.
Senate moves to end debate on the house passed reciprocal trade bill with votes on bill and amendments set for 1 p.m. Tucson time. A judiciary subcommittee holds hearings on a bill to tighten immigration laws against subversive aliens. The House adjourned until Friday.
