President Truman is not taking direct part in ending the crippling shipping strike. Presidential Secretary Charles G. Ross said there was no news from the White House and denied reports of a post office plan or an embargo on mails.
The nationwide labor strike by 90,000 AFL seamen and up to 400,000 allied maritime workers paralyzes ports, with wage disputes over the War Stabilization Board. Harry Lundeberg says no return to work until wage cuts are scrapped as tugboats idle and rail car fleets halt. John L. Lewis sends support and mocks the stabilization board.
Enrollment noon today totals 12 051 up from 10 928 last opening day. High school 2 434, junior high 2 827, elementary 6 790. Notable increases include Government Heights elementary 122 and Catalina junior high 72.
