A dust caused crash near a service station just off Suniand Gin Road north of Tucson killed Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gene Wehunt of Woodland California and another unidentified driver.
A dust storm caused a chain reaction on I-10 near Eloy with 19 cars and multiple trucks involved. Police report several injured, including Mexican nationals on a Border Patrol bus, and advise motorists to leave the roadway during dust events.
Wheat growers led by Don Woodward threaten action if long sharemen continue blocking grain sales to Russia. A federal judge barred a sick-out by longshoremen and ordered loading of Russian grain at New Orleans Port. Woodward urged Ford to end the USSR shipping dispute to prevent further price fallout.
In Hollywood the planned strike by film editors technicians and stage workers was called off after Universal Pictures and four IATSE locals negotiated separately with the producers union. Paramount details remained unclear while parallel teacher strikes shut schools across 11 states prompting court actions and restraining orders in Lynn Massachusetts and other districts.
Phoenix AP report notes a 50 percent fall in highway deaths from 308 in 1973 to 161 in 1974 after the 55 mph limit. Non fatal injuries fell 35 percent, but injury to death ratio rose 24 percent as speeds lowered. Patrols issued 13 percent more speeding tickets amid enforcement.
A large earthquake in Diyarbakir and surrounding hamlets kills at least 250 with over 1,000 injured. The Seismological Institute cites a 6.8 magnitude. Aftershocks complicate rescue as vast areas including Lice Hazro and nearby provinces suffer impact.
Pro-Communist Gen. Vasco Goncalves is ousted from power after a six week struggle by moderates. The Revolutionary Council reconstituted and Goncalves resigns as chief of staff. Vice Admiral Jose Pinheiro de Azevedo expected to form a cabinet with Socialist and Centrist Popular Democrats support.
