War Veteran Slays 12 on Camden Street in Sudden Frenzy

Sea Flying Boat Lands Safely In Honolulu

The Philippine Mars four engine flying boat carrying 54 passengers and crew landed safely at Keehi Lagoon Honolulu after engine trouble 440 miles out to sea. It was convoyed by an air sea rescue Flying Fortress and Pan American strato cruiser.

Odom Dies In Plane Plunge

William P. Odom 30, famed flyer who crossed oceans solo and circled the globe, crashed his racing plane in a house fire during the National Air Races near Cleveland. The tragedy also claimed Mrs. Jeanne Laird 24 and her infant son Craig, as the F-51 Mustang tore through a suburban home. Odom had won a preliminary race the day before and previously set world speed and distance records in light planes.

Sheriff Raids Club Seize Four Slot Machines

Pasquel Torres, 41, club manager, was booked on possessing gaming devices after a raid on the CMS Mexican Social club at 3750 S Sixth Ave. Four slot machines were confiscated. No patrons were playing and no liquor license was found. The raid, using a search warrant, followed a disturbance call and leaves 25 machines seized since July 20. Torres pleaded innocent and trial set for Sept 13 with four other managers to be tried that date.

Prison guards fire on escapees at Florence work gang

In Florence a four-man escape attempt ended with state prison guards shooting Roscoe Woolsey and capturing three others as road work near Pos ton Butte began. Woolsey, 21, was wounded in the leg and taken to the prison hospital in serious but not life threatening condition. Remaining escapees were identified as Richard Raymond 22 Robert Holiday 27 and Robert Ed Murray 27.
