A hurricane strength storm lashed the Great Plains and Midwest, with 100 mph winds and heavy rains causing millions in damage. Five airmen died near Great Salt Lake after a bomber encounter with severe weather. In California and Minnesota towns, fires, collapses, and electrocutions followed as roofs blew off, trees toppled, and cornfields were flattened. The storm moved toward Hudson Bay as heat persisted in the east.

The body of 2 year old Crystal Lee Dutton of Port Huron Michigan was recovered from Rock Island Imperial wreckage after an eastbound washout near Meade Kansas. Several passengers were killed and many injured as cars derailed and rested near the tracks. Other victims included Mrs. Clarence Moon Mrs. B G Frazier Joe Robinson Junior Mitchell and Joe Wade. Thirty nine were treated and 26 detained overnight with trains expected to resume by noon. Selah Brown was injured with a fractured pelvis.
