Pittsburgh October 1 half million CIO steelworkers walked out for free pensions and insurance shutting 53 steel plants and 50 iron ore firms across 23 states. The strike followed failed mediation with U S Steel and Truman delays and posed a broad threat to the economy with coal miners idle.
Pittsburgh dispatch notes U P I mine operators plan to restart Monday to heat homes this winter while 380,000 soft coal miners stay on strike. Demand for soft coal declined as steel mills closed, easing shortages. Anthracite miners and other regions expected full five day weeks. some mines in Colorado will not reopen.
Two strike votes were cast at a three-hour meeting in Tucson, with 39 to 33 supporting a walkout and 51 to 21 backing a wage proposal. They accepted a five-cent-an-hour raise from Tucson Rapid Transit Co, keeping all TRT buses in service.
The Arizona Corporation Commission approved an application to establish a bus line in Mesa. Lonnie Wilkinson, former superintendent of Metropolitan bus lines in Phoenix, said the tentative starting date for the service is Oct. 7.

Construction is under way on a new auditorium for the First Baptist church in Winslow. The contract, for 30000 dollars, was awarded to William L. Brown of Flagstaff. The building will include a heating plant in addition to the auditorium.

The Phoenix city council voted to purchase the Arizona Water Co for 500000 and to lease the Fox parking lot to Landrum & Mills Realty Co. Angel O. Fimbres aged 29 of 712 North Tenth Avenue drove past the police station after striking another auto and fleeing. Patrolman Joseph A. Samide pursued the high speed car as it rubbed a tire on a curb and failed to stop at a sign. Fimbres resisted arrest and was charged with hit and run and reckless driving.

Strickler as secretary treasurer and also TRT vice president. Arizona relations veteran A. Tanner of Phoenix holds a TRT vice presidency as the company reorganizes after the summer transition and contract differences. Tigrett succeeded White who died in January 1948. he had prior stock interest and past ties to White in the transportation field.
After a threatened walkout drivers voted 60 to 2 to strike but, with Federal Conciliator D. G. Godman and TRT native William J. Fillmore, the contract raised minimums to 1.00 for drivers and 1.20 after 18 months. Shop workers gain part of the increase, and signing was expected today.
An official of the state corporation commission said he will meet in Tucson Tuesday with stockholders of the San Pedro Mining Company of Pinal County. Earl Hastings headed the securities division and scheduled a daylong meeting to hear stockholder complaints. The company was ordered to show cause on Oct. 10 why stock sales should not be halted. Hastings said the conference would be held in the Pima County attorney's office.
