A major blaze swept nearly half a city block in Pottstown Pennsylvania gutting the three story Kessler drug and department store and threatening neighboring shops. Hundreds of firefighters battled flames as structures burned and smoke blanketed the area.
In Phoenix on November 21 Senate President Fritz said the industrial commission offered only indefinite recommendations and would hear from all groups. High school football at Tucson stalled as workers dismantled bleachers at Tucson High Stadium where the Badgers and Amphi teams played, with games set to end Wednesday.
The United Nations assembly votes on plans to create Libya and Italian Somaliland as independent states within UN trusteeships. Libya would gain independence by 1952 with a unified government. Somaliland by 1960 under a UN trusteeship aided by Colombia, Egypt, and the Philippines. Eritrea fate to be studied by a five nation commission.
Tucson's police chief Don J. Hays delaying return from San Diego for five more days after requesting extension to stay with wife Mrs. Hays who is reported satisfactory at Mercy hospital. He missed the police pension board meeting for the fourth time as investigations over a $250 reward check proceed. The board awaits the chief's return to serve a subpoena and determine next steps.
Michael Straus U S commissioner of reclamation arrives in Phoenix for a one day Salt River Valley visit. He and Senator Carl Hayden will be guests of honor at a Salt River Valley Water Users' Association event and will inspect reclamation projects the following day. He comes from Fort Worth where he met Oscar L Chapman newly appointed Secretary of the Interior.
Julius Rive, 56, a Phoenix bookkeeper for the Salt River Valley Water Users' association, died after a bucking horse fall on Sunday.
U S asked 30 countries including Russia to protest the treatment of American consular staff in Mukden China. Consul General Angus Ward and four aides were held for over a year after arrest on charges of beating a Chinese. An alarm by Secretary of State Dean Acheson urged wartime allied nations to press Peiping for freedom and details remained scarce.
Final public hearing on low cost housing in Tucson will be held in the council chambers at city hall at 7 30 p m tomorrow with recommendations by the citizens housing committee expected to follow before the first of December. The committee led by Morris Udall has studied slum clearance in Old Pueblo and will present findings to the mayor and council for action. Dr Howard invited speakers include E D Herreras W A Sherwood Dr Lewis Howard and John Joynt. The meeting may be the last housing hearing unless many testify.
General Montgomery arrives in the United States for a 12 day visit with top U S military chiefs. He will speak at the English-speaking Union in New York on November 29 and attend the Army Navy game in Philadelphia as a guest of General Collins. He plans defense talks on Europe and the North Atlantic defense plan funded by Congress.
University of California President Robert Gordon Sproul announced salary increases for professors and other academic staff retroactive to July 1. Instructors receive 3 900 to 4 200, assistant professors 4 500 to 5 100, associate professors 5 700 to 6 300, and professors 7 200 to 8 400 annually.
A plane carrying 35 aboard, including 29 Jewish refugee children under 12, vanished after last contact with Fornebu while en route from Tunis via Brussels. Rescue efforts in heavy fog found no trace, though engines were heard and crews searched the wooded area overnight.
