Nixon signs bill raises federal share for school lunches

President Nixon signed a measure boosting federal support for school lunch programs from eight to ten cents per lunch. The law raises aid for reduced price and free meals and sets eligibility for the program at families earning up to 6,300 dollars a year, narrowing the qualifying income.

City declares emergency plan to use volunteers for fires

Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier announced an around the clock volunteer fire warden plan after city firemen rejected a final contract offer. The plan calls for 2100 volunteers age 16 and older to use their own vehicles to scout neighborhoods check false alarms and evacuate residents during a fire.

Soviet fleet near 6th Fleet port off Greek island

Off the Greek island of Kithira, 14 Soviet navy ships lay at anchor within miles of the U S 6th Fleet home port at Athens. Vice Admiral Daniel J Murphy warned at a shipboard news conference that the growing momentum of the Soviet fleet concerns him greatly as jet fighters and missiles could bridge the distance in minutes.

Prisoner Caught After Escape in Tucson

A 22 year old escapee Jeffery Anderson was captured on the Tucson North Side around 3 40 am by Patrolman Jt Jones and police dog Suidance after a multi agency search including four dogs and a helicopter. Anderson, held on forgery assault with a deadly weapon and possession of heroin for sale, escaped from a detention officer on the way to Pima County Hospital and was treated for a bruised leg before being returned to jail on charges of escape and suspected robbery.

Snowball attack leaves crippled man dead in Spokane

A 56 year old, crippled man Manuel Feil collapsed and died after a barrage of snowballs by several youths outside a Spokane supermarket. He had heart trouble and was walking with a cane when he tried to dodge the throws and fell. Police reported witnesses.

Richardson backs Nixon honesty in Watergate denials

Former attorney general Richardson said Nixon has told the truth about not having direct knowledge of Watergate. He urged full disclosure of presidential materials for Jaworski and cautioned that cooperation with the special prosecutor is essential. Ruckelshaus also endorsed full disclosure and support for a broader probe. The House subcommittee moved to appoint a special prosecutor for a three-year term.
