A United Press tally shows at least 457 people dead from accidents since Friday 6 p m and 46 in traffic as millions travel for the long Memorial Day weekend. Drownings, electrocution deaths, a missing boy in Oklahoma, and a fatal bus crash near Toronto are reported amid state crackdowns to curb holiday fatalities.
More than 40 local veterans groups plan an 8:30 a.m. Memorial Day gathering at Evergreen cemetery in Tucson. Victor Klauser leads the parade to the G A R plot for 8:45 a.m. services with Paul Russel and Rev. Raymond Buck presiding. The day includes addresses by Mayor Don Hummel and other rites at American Legion and VFW plots, with taps and closing prayers.
Don Hummel, newly elected mayor, surveys City Hall and questions how to fix the aging building after $184,000 spent on remodels. He notes a sagging floor and blocked doors with steel supports and ponders moving the police to the second floor to save rent, despite a possible $5,000 move cost.
I Tabori of Hungary wins the miracle mile in 3 59. The Britons Chris Chataway and Bryan Newson finish close behind at 3 99.86. John Disley places fourth as the world four minute barrier is discussed with Landy Bannister records cited.
In observance of Memorial Day most Tucson businesses and all city county and federal offices will be closed Monday. Local banks and downtown groceries will close. there will be no mail deliveries. Law enforcement and fire protection agencies stay on duty. The Citizen will be published as usual.
Tucson Rapid Transit drivers voted to strike if wage talks fail after the current contract expires May 31. Union official Henry B. Mann said negotiations were short and charged the company with refusing to discuss changes. The union seeks an hourly top wage rise toward the Phoenix level of 1.70 plus benefits.
Belgrade reports say the Russians shifted to a second line in talks with Yugoslavia aimed at a passive coexistence role in the cold war. Tito reportedly resisted and pressed for a governmental level discussion as Brioni talks continue after a gala White Palace reception.
Eddie Stanky was fired as manager of the fourth place St. Louis Cardinals. Harry Walker was named to replace him. The report also notes a triple play by the New York Giants against the Brooklyn Dodgers and multiple home runs across several games.
Two Fort Huachuca soldiers from the 36th Army Band were sentenced to two years in prison and dishonorable discharges for illegal possession of narcotics after a court martial in Nogales. Four other soldiers were acquitted of conspiracy to smuggle narcotics.
Detroit bulletin reports Henry Ford II declined Walter Reuther's invitation to join contract talks between Ford Motor Co and the CIO United Auto Workers, a development amid strike threats. Details continue on page 47.
Weather outlook promises clear warm days and pleasant nights for Memorial Day weekend. Yesterday's high in the Old Pueblo reached 89, with a 59 degree low. today and tomorrow expect highs near 90 to 95 as drivers are urged to travel carefully.
Prime Minister Anthony Eden won a 59 seat Commons majority but faced a potential nationwide rail strike with 65 000 engineers set to walk out at midnight. The dock strike continued in Manchester Liverpool and London as ministers sought conciliation.
Surgeon General Leonard A. Arizona building contractors and the union announce a wage offer including a 20 cent per hour rise for skilled workers in the five basic crafts. The joint release cites a further 2.5 cent increase on October 1 for all crafts and raises ranging from five to twenty cents for unskilled and semi-skilled workers by classification.
