Death Forecast Played By Forrestal Ends In Tragic Leap

Washington May 23 A joked death forecast by James V Forrestal became his real fate when he leaped from a 16th story window at the naval hospital. The nine year Washington veteran cracked under the capital strain and had earlier refused to resign, saying he would be a victim of the Washington scene. Louis A Johnson succeeded him after a quick resignation ruling.

GM Cuts Prices Again Across All Passenger Cars and Trucks

Detroit May 23 General Motors Corp announced a further price cut of 10 to 40 dollars on all passenger cars and trucks effective immediately. This marks the second reduction in three months following a February cut of similar range plus truck price trims. In Berlin a fatal clash occurred as rioters clashed with Communist strike breakers at the Am Zoo elevated station.

Lead price cut at smelter lowers to 13 cents a pound

In New York the price of lead was reduced to 13 cents per pound on a New York basis, marking an 8.14 cent drop since March 8 as a leading custom smelter trimmed the rate. John L. Lewis met Monday with United Mine Workers district presidents to discuss strategy in talks with southern coal operators, with details not disclosed.

Detroit May 23 negotiations in the Ford motor strike were recessed indefinitely. Federal Mediator Arthur C. Viat said he would start a new course toward settlement after 19 days of walkout that idled about 106000 Ford workers.
