Amarillo Texas faced a deadly twister that killed four people and injured 83 while skirting the south side of the city. The tornado damaged 35 blocks and destroyed 40 planes at Tradewinds airport with losses around 350000 dollars. A relief fund surpassed 18000 dollars as residents aid the homeless and a city committee forms to oversee relief efforts.

The cutter Owaso reached the last reported position and hunted for life boats or wreckage.
Democratic tax expert Rep. Wilbur D. Mills proposes requiring corporations estates trusts and nonresident aliens to pay all taxes within six months after year end. The plan would raise about 5 billion dollars in early 1950 but offers only a short-term fix with no long-range spending solution. It has tacit approval from Ways and Means leaders and was presented to Treasury Secretary John W. Snyder for comment.
Phoenix May 17 The Arizona house of representatives will grow from 58 to 72 members after the 1950 election. The house rules committee met to plan ways to accommodate the extra members as required by apportionment law. Discussions included potential changes to the law and reducing the number of additional lawmakers.
Detroit May 17 The federal government moves toward direct intervention as a mediator holds separate talks with Ford and the CIO United Auto Workers amid a 13 day strike that idles over 100000 workers. Ford rejects federal mediation preferring private talks.
Phoenix May 17 The attorney general announced a plan to have State Land Commissioner O C Williams lease land and then file suit to declare the lease null and void for not having been properly appraised. The move aims to resolve confusion in the statutes governing state lands leases.
Official results from the Soviet controlled eastern zone report 12,024,221 ballots with 4,080,272 or 33.9 percent voting no on a single hand-picked slate for a 2,000 member people's congress. Turnout reached 95.2 percent of 13,533,071 eligible voters amid claims of agitation and delayed returns.

Phoenix May 17 A missal of 26 field men from the staff of W E Stanford county tax assessor effective day was ordered by the county supervisors. The move keeps within limits but Stanford warned it will lose at least 5 000 900 dollars of unsecured personal property on the tax rolls. We will pick up some next year but will be that much behind. Assessing is a never finished job.
Brig. Gen. Frank Upton Greer retired Army officer who led the first Allied invasion into Oran in World War II died at his Gainesville home from heart trouble.
Federal Housing Expeditor Tighe E. Woods told a San Francisco audience that postwar housing is 85 percent for sale and 15 percent for rent. He urged reversing the mix, citing a national need for about 1,000,900 rental units in 02 large cities and rents as low as 15 per room to end rent controls within a year. He noted limited use of local rent control options and a 16 percent drop in the past year.
