Senators Vote to Slash Foreign Aid
The senate approved cutting 250 million dollars from European recovery funds for the next year, a 47 to 33 vote. The measure matches the house authorization of 2.85 billion for the third year of ECA, with actual money to follow in later bills. Six Republicans joined 34 Democrats against Taft’s cut proposal, while a prior attempt to cut by a billion failed on a 62 to 17 vote. Democratic Leader Lucas urged full funding, warning isolationism would raise defense costs from 13.5 billion to 25–30 billion annually.
