Congress pursued rent control and veterans pensions as the White House faced administration opposition. A senate home rule amendment allowed cities to drop controls with state approval, while a 90 dollar monthly pension for World War II and World War I veterans loomed, despite Truman’s objections.
Mrs. Ejilene Diana Latta-Lawrence sues Navy captain Harold Latta-Lawrence claiming his twenty year attachment to Rep Edith Nourse Rogers of Massachusetts ruined their marriage. The suit seeks separate maintenance and property accounting. Rogers denies the claim as ridiculous.
The first government witness will testify Wednesday in the conspiracy trial of 11 Communist leaders. Indictments allege teaching and advocating overthrow of the U S government by force. Defense motions for mistrial were denied by Federal Judge Harold Medina after open statements.
Phoenix report states that refunding of existing bond issues is not affected by a new Arizona law. The attorney general's office reaffirmed an earlier opinion. Gov Garvey has not signed or vetoed the measure, and may study its scope. The bill could prohibit refinancing to lower rates unless specified. The issue in Pima county centers on a 4 million dollar sanitary district bond.
Washington, March 23 The United States conference of mayors will approve a broad Truman program including adequate rent control federal aid to education new school buildings hospital construction and river pollution control. City leaders oppose the senate home rule provision and favor centralized control.

More than 200 invitations have been mailed for a Sunday ceremony marking the start of a large scale airlift between La Paz and Bisbee Douglas with Skyfresh Products and Slick Airways. Attendees include U S and Mexican officials and Walter Thurston and Gen Agustin Olachea Aviles.
The state wide planning committee met in Phoenix Tuesday proposing highway improvements for the Tucson area. S. M. Beaudry urged $1,000,000 for a freeway, plus upgrades to U S 80, the Ajo road, U S 84 and U S 89. Total requests reached $62,000,000 but only $9,000,000 may be funded. The Kingman-Topock cutoff drew broad support among northern counties.
Pittsburgh report notes Jim Boyd was confirmed as director of the federal bureau of mines by a Senate vote of 50 to 11. The move comes as John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers contemplates mine shutdowns and potential restart plans amid coal industry labor tensions.
Washington reports the world peace conference in New York opens Friday as part of Moscow opposed to the North Atlantic pact. Eleven European and South American delegates are barred while 21 Soviet and eastern European officials enter as entitled visas. Unofficial attendees are scientists and intellectuals. The State Department upholds the ban amid a Shapley appeal.
The Senate on Wednesday unanimously confirmed Louis A. Johnson to be secretary of defense. He will succeed James Forrestal on March 31 after the Armed Services Committee moved the nomination to the floor with an emergency basis. Senate leaders indicated no objections and approved the nomination without discussion.

Gov. Dan E. Garvey opened the Pima County Fair with a ribbon cutting at the rodeo grounds as about 100 attendees watched. The Davis Monthan air force band played while exhibitors, cattle, rabbits, poultry and pigs prepared for judging. Entries include 30 plus commercial exhibits and Indian art from the Papago reservation. Judging began at 9 a m with S D Jernigan of Lampasas Texas and Virgil Bond of Tucson announcing results across classes from prospective quarter running fillies to model cow horse colts and mare and foal.
Senate interior committee chairman Sen. O Mahoney urges restricting issues in the proposed supreme court test of Colorado River water rights. The House approved an upper Colorado basin compact giving Arizona 50 000 acre feet annually and allocating the rest among Colorado Wyoming Utah New Mexico and Arizona. The measure now goes to President Truman.
In Tokyo on March 23 visitors crowded Ueno Zoo for Be Kind to Animals Day as a giraffe collapsed and died. Veterinarians attributed the death to the animal eating herself to death.
In St Louis on March 23 unions representing 3,500 engine crews conductors and trainmen agreed to end a week long strike. Freight and passenger service were to resume as G H Sido vice president and general manager said workers would keep their seniority intact.
Funeral services for Don A. Gustin of Phoenix Arizona senior administrative assistant to Senator Carl Hayden will be held Thursday. Gustin a University of Arizona graduate was found dead in his hotel room Monday after six weeks of ill health. Rev Frederick Brown Harris senate chaplain will conduct services.
Senators Donnell of Missouri and Watkins of Utah call for a lengthy public hearing on the North Atlantic security pact. They seek permission for all 96 senators to question witnesses, with hearings planned after the treaty is signed. Connally says the Foreign Relations Committee will open hearings. non-committee members may not be allowed direct questioning.
A rescue team recovered five bodies from a Tucson B-29 tanker wreck on a mountain northeast of Manila. Four other crew members are presumed dead as the 56 man expedition braved jungle and bandits to reach the summit. Fortunes of Lt. Col. Hunt identified by diamond ring. other bodies unnamed.
The Atomic Energy Commission plans a $120 million facility near Pocatello Idaho to build and test reactors. The 400000 acre site near Arco navy grounds will employ about 2000 workers and may rival Hanford in size. Montana campaigned to host the project but Idaho remains the chosen location.
