In Kern County near Bakersfield a rush to claim uranium rights erupted after the AEC released a uranium map showing three hot spots about 30 miles east. About 130 claims were filed with hundreds more expected as attendees crowded the AEC office and copied map symbols overnight.
Robert Doherty of Hanford organized a fast moving line of 11 partners in jeeps and pack animals after a Bakersfield map release. Vendors outside the AEC office sold Geiger counters as buyers hurried for the new hot spots in eastern Kern County near Democratic Hot Springs Caliente Bodfish and Miracle Springs. The AEC map stems from an aerial gamma radiation survey with a second pass anticipated by mid April.
The Senate approved by voice vote a bill extending corporation and excise tax rates one year beyond April 1 in line with President Eisenhower's request. Democratic leaders criticized the move as wiping out a proposed $20 tax cut for low income taxpayers in 1956 plus $10 per dependent.
