San Angels backers win regents approval to fund Tempe stadium about a mile from Tempe. Regents cite 243000 authorizes plus 500000 revenue bonds. Move reverses prior Tempe construction priority. No student housing included. housing at Tempe and university campuses remains critical.
Arizona Land Commissioner O C Williams asks Attorney General Fred O Wilson and State Auditor Ann Frohmiller for a complete investigation and audit of the state land department amid charges of mismanagement by the Education Association and the Arizona Federation of Labor. He says findings should settle truth or falsity of the accusations. Governor Garvey had previously been linked to an inquiry into a Paradise Valley land deal involving Williams and Santa Fe script, with questions over timing and legality.

Phoenix legislators clashed over a bill to create a tuberculosis sanitarium with 750000 dollars instead of the 1447000 originally requested. Rep Harold Giss urged restoring full funding by a tobacco tax tweak while Rep Carleton Morris noted the 750000 would only build a small lab and 75 beds.

London reports the five Western European union nations Britain France Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg and cabinet ministers review the final draft of the North Atlantic defense pact. The pact to be signed in Washington aims at mutual defense with Canada and Norway, with Denmark Italy Portugal and Iceland as potential joiners.
Washington report states about 70 strategic targets in Russia were earmarked for potential attack, with the B 36 Super bomber able to strike all from bases in North America without refueling. Top secret maps at the national defense establishment mark targets within a 4000 mile radius of Alaska and Labrador bases.
