British fliers attack northern France and Belgium railways with Whirlwinds and bombers. The RAF launches a massive raid on Berlin, causing extensive damage and reporting 89 killed and 213 injured according to Berlin radio.
The RAF and US heavy bombers pounded Berlin in a night raid described as a heavy concentrated assault. About 900 tons of bombs, including two and four ton blockbusters, fell on the capital. Nineteen aircraft did not return from the operation, and officials say Berlin suffered unprecedented destruction. The raid was framed as a step toward Allied invasion of Europe.
The Navy reported American dive bombers attacked the Japanese airbase area at Munda on New Georgia island in the Solomons on March 1. Dauntless dive bombers with Grumman F4F escorts bombed the held area and all U. S. planes returned. It was the 80th raid on Munda since November 23 when Guadalcanal forces began the campaign.
Prime Minister Peter Fraser announced that guards at a New Zealand prisoner of war camp shot dead or fatally wounded 48 Japanese and wounded another 63 after the Japanese attacked with improvised weapons. Two officers and five guards were injured, one of whom later died.
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the United States will utterly destroy the Japanese fleet before the war ends and impose terms denying Japan a military fleet. He urged extending the lend lease act and building Pacific naval bases for postwar value. The House Rules Committee backed a two day debate on extending lend-lease for one year to address criticisms.
Voters turnout remained low across wards in Tucson as a mayoral and three council seats contest drew few participants. In the fourth ward 88 votes split 80 Democrats and 8 Republicans, with Halbert W. Miller facing Martin S. Rogers.
In Phoenix on March 2 the Arizona Senate again rejected Gov. Osborn’s nomination of C. V. Hill as state examiner. The chamber, after reading Osborn’s letter, voted unanimously no and adjourned to executive session, with Osborn not commenting on next steps or Hill’s possible service.
Soviet dispatches report Marshal Semeon Timoshenko leading a wide northern offensive, driving German forces from a broad sector west of the Valdai hills. The campaign recaptured 302 villages and over 900 square miles, with 8,000 Germans killed and 3,000 captured in an eight day push. Demyansk Lychkovo and Zaluchye were among towns retaken as Izvestia noted strong German resistance and strategic setbacks.
Allied bomber fleets appear ready to strike a large Japanese convoy moving toward New Guinea. Gen. MacArthur's headquarters said the 14-vessel force, including warships, was under a storm front hindering air attack. The move signals a shift to offensive preparations in the area.
The Senate military committee approved the Bankhead bill to defer draft induction of men in farm work by 9 to 7 with an amendment extending deferments to December 31. A five hour delay was ordered on further action, as Truman and others warn the measure is dangerous and hearings open on the Austin-Wadsworth national service bill for broad draft authority.
Washington March 2 The rules committee cleared for a house vote next week on the Hobbs anti racketeering bill opposed by organized labor. Congress moves to study labor relations as committees push work or fight measures and call Navy absenteeism hearings. Byrd proposes draft boards order strikers back to work or into the armed forces.
Senator Tydings proposes an amendment to extend lend lease for another year and push negotiations with Britain to gain permanent title to western hemisphere bases leased in exchange for destroyers. He argues bases may be needed for future repayment of wartime aid while Senator Connally notes Stettinius says a postwar accounting will measure net value of supplies.

The Arizona Senate kept a closed executive session to investigate the serving of a citation on Senator James E. Babbitt in a libel suit filed by M. C. Reese. Reese later dismissed the action. attendees included Reese's attorney R G Langmade and Cox who represented other mutual benefit societies. Weaver and Wilson, names cited, attended with the dismissal order.
Unofficial talks in London and Washington examine Russia postwar territorial aims tied to Poland. Kremlin aims likely include restoration of prewar frontiers, a stance seen as hard to refuse at a future peace conference. The dispute comes as Nazi propaganda heightens Europe’s tensions.
Allied troops repelled von Arnim attacks in northern Tunisia claiming 24 German tanks destroyed and about 600 Axis troops killed. They captured Sbeitla in central Tunisia and advanced three miles east while air forces claimed 25 Axis planes shot down. Americans and British also struck near El Aroussa and near Madjez el Bab Goubellat with hundreds of enemy casualties reported.
Washington March 2 Congress backers of the Ruml plan seek to attach a skip a tax year provision to a 20 percent withholding levy on the wages of more than 30 million earners. The Ways and Means subcommittee approved the levy to begin July 1 and applied to current tax computations. Taxpayers would still pay at least the first two 1942 installments due March 15 and June 15.
In Phoenix on March 2 the Arizona House started discussion of a county planning and zoning bill sponsored by the Pima delegation to establish a zoning program for areas within six miles of cities with populations over 25 000. The measure targets Phoenix and Tucson with residential limits and allows 100 residents near the cities to petition for an election to decide inclusion under the law. Representative Gaynor K. Stover of Pima said the bill would affect more property value around Phoenix and Tucson than interbasin water projects. On the third reading the house passed eight bills, including two companion measures to the public.
Boiling air and poisonous gases forced rescue teams at the Smith mine in Bearcreek Montana to suspend efforts to reach 60 workers believed trapped after Saturdays explosion. Fourteen victims found so far with six more discovered early today. three escaped earlier.
Helsinki March 2 President Risto Ryti in a surprise move entrusts Parliament Speaker Vaino Hkkila with forming a new government after the old cabinet resigned to clear Ryti for his new term. Tyko Reinikka had been favored in speculation as premier candidate.
