UMW funds tied to Boyle reelection scheme alleged
A Senate subcommittee presented substantial evidence of misuse of United Mine Workers funds in Tony Boyle’s 1969 $250,000 reelection drive. Off icers were forced to contribute based on salary, with potential pay raises later returning funds to the union treasury. The probe cites possible violations of the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act and follows the Yablonski murder context. Separately, the House halted a Bureau of Mines PR campaign seen as blaming miners for mine disasters.

Scoutmaster Warned Boats Inadequate Before River Disaster
Utah boating chief Todd Tuttle said Scoutmaster John Ungbarsky was warned weeks earlier that the four-man rubber rafts were underclassed for the Green River run. One 13 year old scout, Edwin McCarthy, died after rescuing a younger boy as the group was swept into Desolation Canyon. Twenty five scouts and leaders returned home after the rafts collapsed in rugged rapids, with authorities stating lack of notice and underperforming equipment contributed to the tragedy.
