The 32nd international labor conference approved a binding convention by 90 to 14. It requires governments of 61 member states to ratify, ensuring workers receive protection against antiunion discrimination in employment.

Washington June 30 Administration forces won a key victory as the house approved the public housing measure by 228 to 185. Arizona representatives split with John R. Murdock voting yes and Harold A. Patten voting no. The bill now moves toward final passage with posturing by a Republican southern Democrat coalition and ongoing house senate harmonizing.
Arizona expects its heaviest Independence Day traffic with safety officials warning a crash risk on every 264 feet of highways. About 80 000 Arizona registered cars plus out of state travelers are expected to jam routes to Flagstaff Prescott and the Grand Canyon during the long weekend.

Ruth Steinhagen, 19, was indicted and found insane by a Chicago court in record speed for her June 14 attempt to kill baseball star Eddie Waitkus. Waitkus testified, the hearing lasted about ninety minutes, and she faced transfer to the state mental hospital at Kankakee later the same day.

John L. Lewis ordered soft coal miners east of the Mississippi to work a three day week after a ten day vacation. The contract expires at midnight but the plan aims to reduce tensions and avoid a full strike. West of the river miners are not bound by the three day limit.
State Auditor Ann Frohmiller said she may delay payment of George Findley Macdonald’s $6000 salary as director of the Arizona Corporation Commission securities division until his qualifications are clarified. Miss June Pew named Macdonald’s assistant at $3000 annually as the appointment awaits confirmation.
